We wan them to come back. Why dont bush and rumsfeld send their kin to war?

I just spent a little time on your blog.

Yeah, my husband and his brother weren’t born and raised in this country either. THEY joined the military.

Do you still want that cookie?

And Rachel, you actually read some of his blog?  I couldn’t make out what his point was supposed to be.  Although I think that this post:

I have a lot of respect for the guys who are over there doing their duty, and I’ll admit it’s a difficult job that I wouldn’t want to have to do myself. But they shouldn’t be there in the first place: we got suckered into this war by the lies and deception of an administration that would stop at nothing to settle a vendetta with Saddam, and our guys continue to die needlessly every day because this same administration won’t admit its mistakes and incompetence. Gary and Rachel, I don’t mean to disparage the honor of your family or any other military person. They do what they’re told to do by their commanders, and they do it to the best of their ability with the tools that they’ve been given; I honor them for that. But the fact is this war is WRONG and our soldiers need to be back home, where they belong, ASAP.

Thanks for listening.

(I’ll post what I put in your comments since most people do delete something that disagrees with their own personal opinions which happen to be a right that American’s have since they have been fighting for our freedom since way before 1776)

My husband didn’t write the damn thing. He’s just in the service as is his brother and my sister and father and his best friend and step brother and my other sister ... yeah make that our whole family and of course it’s a little cheesy but your friend is also quite off.
They may have permanent bases in Iraq now but when my sister went there on second round 4 months after 9/11 they had tents.. and porta potties came a little while later. They didn’t have any sort of BX/PX. It was as rough as you could get. They did actually bathe with wipes because they didn’t have showers… or running water.
So lets take someone’s cheesy attempt at a Patriotic poem and cut it all to pieces because of one girl’s opinion of the war and army life. I’ve known hundreds in my 34 year military life and it’s not all fun and games. It’s not all horrible. It’s not all what this poem implies and it’s not all war in Iraq (or Korea or Vietnam or Germany… as if war in other countries is something new right?)

And don’t get me wrong. She has her right to say what she wants and I don’t have a problem with it at all. However so do I and even more so since you decided to link to my husband’s blog. smile

comment by rachel - the crazy wife  on  05/20  at  05:34 AM

It’s not reasonable to expect you to go back to , so I’ll just say I don’t delete stuff from my blog just because I don’t agree with what’s said.

A couple caveats though.

I never said he wrote it.  Paranoid much?  I said I had found a couple of examples, and your husbands site was one of the first google results when I put in one of the phrases from the poem.

I’m not sure what the second clause of your opening statement meant since I can interpret it two ways, but _if_ (please note the conditional) you meant that people can’t (or perhaps shouldn’t) delete other people’s comments because it’d be an infringement of free speech, you’d be wrong.  There’s a handful of reasons why I could and might delete a comment on my blog; libel, “fighting words”, copyright infringement, etc.  Basically, elements that the Supreme Court has already decided aren’t protected by the First Amendment.  Free speech has already been determined not to be an absolute.  Believe me, I’m not denigrating the Constitution, but I’m also a firm believer in law, which is why we have a Supreme Court.

Here’s what I find amusing though about your entire rant.  “One girl” is expressing her opinion, and it’s based on her current experience, or at least of a week ago or so when she sent it to me, but her opinion is apparently not valid, and yours is?  I’m not denying your sister’s experience when she was in Iraq, I’m glad that it’s better now, and if your sister gets rotated back there, I hope her environment is a lot better than it was.  But just because you don’t like what one soldier has to say about the poem, her opinion’s worthless?  That’s pretty sad, in my opinion.

But someone goes and writes a “cheesy attempt at a Patriotic poem” (your words, not mine) and then someone who is active duty refutes it and you get all huffy about it?  I find it amusing, and I’m sure that most of the guys I served with would find your reaction amusing as well.  Yes, I’m a Vet too; Desert Shield and Desert Storm, August 90 - April 91.  If you go back to the poem, we (you and I and my friend and your husband and all the thousands of others we served with) put our lives on the line so that any American _can_ speak their mind about the Government.

I’m curious as to whether your concerns about the rights to free speech will be maintained in keeping this comment alive on your husband’s blog.

comment by Chaos Richard  on  05/20  at  07:22 AM

Oops.  My first paragraph had an HTML typo.  My bad.

It’s not reasonable to expect you to go back to my first post when I reopened my rarely updated blog, so I’ll just say I don’t delete stuff from my blog just because I don’t agree with what’s said.

I’m not going to keep copying these to your blog. They’re kind of long and I’m polite. smile

You’re right. I didn’t go back to the very beginning of your blog. I went to the post that you linked to. You didn’t even take the time to read the comments on this particular post or you’d see we don’t delete comments. Even from the not so bright people like the person at the top. smile

I find it amusing that you either didn’t read or totally misunderstood the comment. Actually probably misinterpreted.
I didn’t mean or say or imply that people shouldn’t delete comments because of the freedom of speech. That’s totally ridiculous. I meant that MOST people do delete comments of others who disagree with them. I meant and said (or typed rather) that I agree that your friend has the right to say whatever the hell that she wants to and that I on the same note have the same right to say whatever the hell that I want to in return.

IF your friend has served any time in Iraq at all (even more so than before it turned relatively civilized for the troops) then she would know that most of that poem was in fact true as to the conditions of the troops then. However, since as you say she joined the military “last year after graduation” then there is no way that she was in Iraq at that time period thus can’t really base her experience alone and say that the poem is wrong where it does mention things like staying up long hours and going without showers and getting shot at. While gossip does run rampant on base and most military personal (wives and troops alike) you can’t tell me that while people are being shot and constantly worrying about IEDs that they are talking shit about the guy in the next ditch.

Some of her arguments are just completely obnoxious. We complain about how hot it is. It doesn’t say that his “heavy gear” is uncomfortable but (again, she hasn’t been in Iraq when it was “rough") when they first arrived they had to be in full battle gear with helmets and my sister had to carry around a freaking rocket launcher… albeit was a small one it was one none the less. You think that’s comfy when it’s 120+?

My sister and her fellow troops took baths the first 6 months she was there with BABY WIPES. She didn’t get clean uniforms daily/weekly because the military “requires them to be clean”. They take the quick bath IF they have water to wash their balls, face and one other thing I can’t remember. How glamorous is that?

MRE’s were not always available for the soldiers when we first arrived in Iraq. Hasn’t she ever been on one of those training drills where they are in the field for a week and are given nothing but a pack? They don’t have MRE’s they have to look for food. It’s called survival school.

We talked to my sister six months after she got there and they had cleared out one of Saddam’s palaces and a bunch of troops got to stay there to get out of the sand. Before then she relied on letters (and our gift boxes with things like tampons and baby wipes took 6 weeks to get to her because they didn’t have “addresses” much less a “mini base").

Abu Gharab? Did she miss the part where terrorists are not given the same rights under the Geneva convention?

If she hasn’t heard people make fun of the military then she doesn’t get out much. Most liberals that I know support the troops just fine. It’s the government they talk shit about. It’s their right. I don’t argue with that.

Not all soldiers do what they’re told. Good ones do. Good ones also don’t talk mad shit about their boss whether they agree with him or not. smile

I never said or got the implications that all of this poem had everything to do with Iraq. I never assumed by her answers that all of this poem had to do with Iraq however she compared normal every day military life to the parts where they were talking about being in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I’m not getting all “huffy” about anything. I’m sure that most of the guys in the military who read this thought 1. it was cheesy and 2. most of it is true when you look at how shallow and self absorbed that most Americans are.

“If you go back to the poem, we (you and I and my friend and your husband and all the thousands of others we served with) put our lives on the line so that any American _can_ speak their mind about the Government.”
You are so right. That is why I flat out said that your little friend had the right to say what she wanted. That’s why I said what I said. That’s why I’m correcting her because she is wrong on her opinions on many accounts. Maybe life in Iraq was pretty fluffy for her but talk to anyone who was there before 2003 (since that seems to be the key year for her). September 11th 2001 not 2003 was when the terrorists who were allowed to train and were protected by Saddam attempted to destroy our country.

Speak your mind but learning to read and comprehend comes in handy too. You probably wouldn’t have misunderstood most of my comment.

p.s. Did you serve from August 90 to April 91 or was that when you were in Saudi?

p.p.s. My husband and I don’t delete comments from our blog. If we did the asshole who commented back up top would have been long gone.

p.p.p.s. I don’t care and he doesn’t care if you linked to your blog but if you didn’t want to start a discussion (because on my side at least that’s what it is) you probably didn’t need to leave a comment pimping out your own “blog” over here. I don’t have time to get upset about what some anonymous person on the Internet says. I’m just correcting you. Sorry if that’s upsetting to you. smile

comment by rachel - the crazy wife  on  05/20  at  09:46 AM

Ok, conditions then/now in Iraq, I’ll leave to those who’ve been there.  I’ve already said why I placed a link to here, and figured since I linked here, I’d link back so you wouldn’t wonder about the references in your logs.

I don’t know how much she gets out, but I’ve been at protests across the country, and have talked to probably hundreds of protesters, and I have as of yet to hear anyone denigrate the troops themselves.  The first time I do, I may very easily be facing assault charges.

My misunderstanding of your earlier statements, which I believe have been cleared up by you, were solely due to a lack of punctuation on your part.  Attempting to decipher a run-on sentence that goes on for 3 screen lengths can be difficult when the sub-clauses can be separated in different ways to provide different meanings to the actual sentence.

I’m going to leave most of your other statements alone since I disagree with you, and I have my reasons for so, but it becomes very much a case of “I have my evidence” coming from both sides, and I think I may have overstayed my visit as it were, anyway.

I will respond to a couple though since the very phrasings were insulting.  August 90 - April 91 was when I was out there.  I was in uniform before then, and I was in uniform after then, and I got out honorably.  I’m also not anonymous.  I actually sign all my posts on my blog.

The exaggerations are cute. No, they really are.  The fact that you pick and choose what you want to read and comprehend is wonderful. It’s not something I’d expect from someone who’s at least 35 years old but hey I learn something new every day. smile

I’ll say it again. I don’t know many who don’t support the troops but they are there. Most support the troops but not the government. I said that clearly before. smile

Most of my comments were directed towards the living conditions of Iraq before all of the bases and living quarters were put up. If you don’t agree with them then I guess you’re just misinformed.

As for the rest, I’m sorry if you were offended or insulted. I guess I’m just a little more informed than you are.

You are however anonymous to me. I have no idea who you are, where you live, what you look like. I’ve never met you, spoken to you. You are anonymous to me. You are a stranger. I don’t get insulted by what some pompous windbag with a “blog” and an opinion thinks about me, my country, my husband and our government and I don’t expect people to care about my opinions, but for some reason they do and it’s amusing. smile

It’s been turned into a Vietnam with more media coverage and more “actors and musicians” who think they’re experts on something.

The reality is that more than 90% of American veterans are glad that they served and 70% + would do it again knowing how it would end (including Vietnam).
Volunteers (not the draftees) made up the deaths in the Vietnam and World War II. It’s the side opposing the war who is pressing for a draft (just as long as it isn’t their babies I assume).

Just over 58,000 troops were killed in Vietnam. 33,000 in Korean. Well over 400,000 in WW2. Previous wars had numbers that fell in between.
War is shitty. No one is arguing with that. I’d like more than anyone to see this over with. Each day that passes is another chance that one of my family members and/or friends is going over to fight in this bullshit. 2400 is not GOOD by any means but compared to the numbers in previous wars it’s a Godsend.

The people who are bitching about the war?  90% of them wouldn’t serve if they were offered a million a year and a promise if not having to ever do any sort of manual labor, war or boot camp. They’re a bunch of Hollywood morons, liberals and college hippie kids with liberal teachers. They have no idea what it entails except for what their professors, Rosie O’Donnell and NBC tells them.

I am just saying that maybe opinions on a poem that was written in a time where things were shitty over there shouldn’t be compared to life on a base in the states or in Iraq where you actually have hot water showers and toilets now.

Don’t bother responding since I’m obviously doing nothing more than offending you.
I’m sorry that I have an opinion and that I have my facts quite straight and that I think an American soldier with a years experience garners respect for joining but not enough experience to know what he or she is talking about when it comes to War.

Congrats on the Honorable Discharge. I’m not putting down or minimizing the fact that you did serve. You should consider yourself lucky that it was those two operations where only about 500 American heroes lost their lives.
